Facts About The Taj Mahal
Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma has made official what is a generally held belief about the Taj Mahal — that it isn’t or never was a Hindu temple. The minister has said that the government hasn’t found any evidence that points to it being anything else other than a mausoleum of Mumtaz Mahal. This comes as a response to a group of lawyers who claimed that the Taj Mahal was a Hindu temple and filed a petition in a court demanding it to be handed over to the Hindus. Indeed, stories of it being a Shiva temple have been floating around for as long as one can remember. In fact in 2000, one PN Oak even petitioned the courts to declare that it was a Hindu king who had constructed the Taj Mahal. The court dismissed the plea.
The Taj Mahal is located in Agra, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is quite close to the national capital, New Delhi. It was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in the loving memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Few stunning Taj Mahal facts for Kids Beside the stunning beauty of the tomb, its garden is also another man made marvel which uses raised pathways which divide it in four quarters or flower beds. At the centre of the lush green garden there stands a massive white marble water tank halfway between the tomb and the gateway with a pool of crystal clear water reflecting the most beautiful example of human architecture.
In another case, a social worker, Amar Nath Mishra claimed that the monument was constructed by a Hindu king, Parmar Dev in 1196. Mercifully, the Allahabad High Court dismissed that plea too.

Over the centuries, the Taj Mahal has been at the center of several stories, some true most of them not. On a day when the government has dismissed the theory of the Taj being a Hindu temple, it seems apt to list out five lesser known facts about the monument. Taj mahal dvd. Agra was not the original venue for the Taj Mahal.
Photograph: Shutterstock Agra has been on the world map for centuries simply for being home to the Taj Mahal. And to think that the Taj Mahal almost didn’t get built here? But it is true. Agra was not supposed to be the original site of the Taj Mahal. Mumtaz Mahal, for whom the Taj is built, died during childbirth not in Agra but rather in a city called Burhanpur. Located in present day Madhya Pradesh, Burhanpur was the original resting place of the empress and Shah Jahan had even marked out a site along the Tapti river to construct his iconic symbol of love. Sadly, Burhanpur couldn’t supply enough white marble to construct the monument and so, along with the Mughal court, Mumtaz Mahal’s remains were transported to Agra where work on the famous building we now know as the Taj began.

The site originally chosen for the Taj Mahal along the Tapti river still lies vacant, a silent reminder of the time that Burhanpur almost had a brush with history. ITripto Travel Guide. Photograph courtesy: Yet another legend that persists about the Taj Mahal is that Shah Jahan wanted to construct a replica across the banks of Yamuna in black marble. The idea came from Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, a European traveler who was in Agra in 1665 and claimed that the plan was abandoned thanks to Aurangzeb, who overthrew and imprisoned his father Shah Jahan. And the theory gained ground when ruins of black marble stones were found in Mahtab Bagh, the garden across the river.
But excavations carried out in the 1990s revealed that the marble stones were just white stones that had turned black over time. But the good folks from Archeological Society of India (or ASI) have since offered a far more plausible theory after they reconstructed part of the pool in Mahtab Bagh and saw the dark reflection of the white monument in the pool.
